Flags of the Militias of the American Revolution

Stars and Stripes, 1777 The Second Continental Congress adopted this design of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777, the origin of 'Flag Day'.

That Congress resolved that "the flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."

With the conflict already begun, the Second Continental Congress (authorized by the First) met in Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, on May 10, 1775.

It was this Congress that took steps to organize and equip an army, and appointed George Washington as commander and chief.

This Congress provided protection of the frontiers and for asking for help from outsiders. It further provided for a system of money and credit, and for a postal system.

The Second Continental Congress served as the central government directing national affairs from 1775 until the Articles of Confederation went into effect in 1781.
