A flag can also be called a color, standard, or jack. The term standard is ordinarily used for flags carried by mounted, mechanized, and motorized troops. The flags carried at the head of dismounted or foot troops are usually called colors. A jack is a small flag which is flown from the jack staff at the front or bow of a vessel.

The national flag which is usually flown over a military camp or station in bad weather is called a storm flag. In good weather a post flag or a garrison flag is displayed. A post flag is twice the size of a storm flag, and a garrison flag is twice the size of a post flag.
