This page contains information on medical conditions/discomforts pertaining only to women. If you are seeking remedies for a condition not listed here, please email me and I will try to get it on my page, or email you the information. Unless otherwise noted, please use herbs according to label instructions, or consult a naturopathic doctor for assistance. All herbs/formulas mentioned on this page should be available at your local health-food store. Also, click here for Health Choice Network's Herbal Formulas which can be ordered via phone or email. (I have not tried their products yet, therefore cannot endorse them. If you try them, please let me know how effective they were--thanks!)

A woman's body has to be the most intriguing and finely tuned instrument on the planet. As women, we have the ability to bring forth life, and to supply that life with nourishment from our bodies. Before modern medicine, most healers were women, who used herbs and other ingredients from nature to aid the body in healing itself, rather than supress symptoms. Throughout the relatively short history of "modern" medicine, most women's dis-eases or discomforts were either ignored or placed on the bottom of the list of priorities. Until recently, PMS was thought to be "all in our minds." Finally the time has come for women to be heard, and for women to recapture the fine art of healing. Healing...not covering up. The time has come for naturopathic ("natural") and allopathic ("modern") medicines to unite. I hope you'll find something here that sparks your interest, or just feels right, and pursue it further. In health! :)
Cystitis--(bladder infections); use goldenseal* and echinacea combined, which will strengthen the immune system and help kill bacteria. Or try a combination tea of bearberry, sage**, and horsetail. Cranberry juice will help acidify urine so bacteria cannot grow there, and will also help keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. Garlic is also good; odorless capsules are available--a great brand is Kyolic. (* not for use during pregnancy; ** not for use if breastfeeding)

Fibrous Breast Lump--also known as fibro-cystic dis-ease. Eliminate all caffeine from diet, including: coffee, tea, chocolate, colas. Many fibrous lumps disappear when dairy products are eliminated, or a vegtarian diet is introduced. Herbs include: 1 oz. red clover, 1 oz blue violet in a pint of water. Drink 1 pint daily for several months. Also, eat whole wheat, which contains vitamin E. (If you have a lump and have not seen your MD or midwife, please do so.)

Hemorrhoids--apply witchhazel with a cotton ball (this may sting a little); may leave cottonball in place for 5-10 minutes, several times per day. Also good: grated raw potatoe, plantain, calendula, comfrey, goldenseal. Also: insert peeled clove of garlic. (Herbal salves are available at most health-food stores, or contact MotherLove--see pregnancy page for address)

Menopause--to ease discomforts of...try vitex, dong quai, black cohosh, or false unicorn root. Many wonderful herbal blends are available, and can help balance hormones and end hot flashes!

Menstruation--Painful..try Wild Yam. Also, Celestial Seasonings' "Sleepy Time Tea" contains chamomile and other herbs that work as a uterine relaxer. For amenorrhea (no periods), try Motherwort. For general balancing of hormones, and to help with PMS, try dong quai, blue cohosh, or a blend of raspberry leaf and chamomile. Crampbark is good for cramping.

Osteoporosis--alfalfa, horsetail, or oatstraw (or all three). MotherLove's "R&R" Formula is excellent. Also, eat lots of leafy greens, sprouts, and nuts. (Spinach is a great source of calcium, but must be eaten with brown rice to neutralize the effects of the oxalic acid.)

Ovarian Cysts--Make a strong tea of red raspberry leaf, black currant, witchhazel leaf, and powdered myrrh. Strain and mix with 1 cup of cooled boiled water. Use nightly as a douche.

Yeast Infections--take acidophilus/bifidus supplements. These friendly bacteria keep yeast under check. Also, avoid sugar, which contributes to yeast overgrowth. Take Essential Fatty Acids, such as Evening Primrose Oil, or Flaxseed Oil. Take garlic capsules, or chew raw garlic (if you can stand it!)

I can't stress enough that the key to health is prevention of dis-ease. The key to prevention of dis-ease is proper nutrition. Please give your body only the best whole, unprocessed foods--organic whenever possible. Avoid artificial ingredients, including colors, flavors, and preservatives.

Supplements and foods that can be helpful in maintaining health:

Bee Pollen--helps with menstrual problems, balances reproductive system hormones, helps prevent cancer. Also try other bee products: propolis, raw honey, and royal jelly (rich in B-vitamins).

Garlic--antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal. Normalizes blood pressure, helps eliminate yeast and bladder infections.

Apple Cider Vinegar--1 teaspoon with 1 teaspoon of honey in a glass of cold water helps remineralize the body, balances potassium, helps osteoarthritis, helps prevent osteoporosis.

Blue-Green Algae--contains every vitamin (except D), mineral, trace mineral, amino acid, essential fatty acid, and enzymes. Nature's perfect food--take in place of synthetic multi-vitamin. After all, our bodies are not made from "synthetic" ingredients.

Acidophilus/Bifidus--friendly bacteria normally found in our bodies, but often deficient. Keeps immune system strong, helps keep intestines/colon clean, kills bad bacteria, keeps yeast in check.

Women's health warning! Dioxin, a toxin released during the production of certain plastics, mimics estrogen, and is causing early menstruation and many other side effects in humans and animals. Please avoid buying plastics with the recycle symbol "3", or any plastics that smell.
