The apple is more widely grown and more valuable to man than any other kind of fruit that grows on a tree. Apple trees have been grown for their fruit since very early times. The fruit is often spoken of in the legends, poems, and religious books of many peoples.
The fruit which Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden is commonly supposed to have been an apple. In a Greek legend a golden apple caused quarreling among the gods and brought about the destruction of the city of Troy (Apple of Discord). Poets and storytellers of many lands have praised the beauty of apple trees in blossom and the goodness of the fruit. The word "apple" has been used in the names of many other kinds of fruit. Among these are the pineapple and the mayapple. Neither fruit is in the least like the true apple.
